Standard military goggles these days are designed with safety in mind. They have ballistic rated lenses which offer protection against just about anything you can throw at them, including shrapnel and flying debris. They also regularly come with interchangeable lenses, with some lenses used during the day and night vision lenses for use at night. However, military goggles have not always been as sophisticated as they are today.
Originally, goggles were designed to protect army personnel's eyes from sandstorms and dust and from damage and poor visibility occurring in high winds. Pilots, jeep drivers and motorcycle drivers were among those who needed to wear goggles. Since then goggles have evolved till you now can find very sophisticated night vision goggles that actually enable the wearer to see where they are going in the dark.
World War One goggles were rather simple items that offered very basic protection against wind and flying debris or sand. Goggles were greatly improved, even between World War One and World War Two, with the World War Two goggles slightly more sophisticated than their earlier counterparts. Vintage versions of military goggles are great collector's items, and there is keen online trading for them. There is also a brisk trade in them at army surplus stores especially in the United States.
Military goggles are classed not only according to the time they were used, as in World War One or World War Two, but also depending on the country they came from. It is very common to find Chinese goggles, German goggles, US Army goggles, and British goggles and all are favorite collectibles.
There is a very wide variety of older goggles on sale, including flight goggles, tanker goggles, motorcycle goggles, military tank goggles, sun wind and dust goggles, and pilot goggles to name just a few. You can even find World War Two 10th Mountain Division Ski goggles which were used in Italy and Switzerland to guard against snow blindness as troops made their way through Europe!
For those interested in modern day warfare goggles, you can find a wide variety online. These goggles range from new US Army desert goggles which sell for a very cheap price, to the used US Military night vision goggles which are currently selling for over $800 USD. Of course, there is a wide range of prices for modern military goggles, depending on the type of goggle and not all are in the integer plus double zero price range.
