Night Vision Goggles
Night Vision goggles were originally created by the US Military, as an aid to Armed Forces being able to conduct night-time operations safely and more easily, and they were first issued to American troops during the Vietnam War.
Although they do not provide you with perfect night vision, they do provide you with a way to cover ground at night without needing to use external lighting methods. Night vision goggles, even the more expensive type, take getting used to. Things appear fuzzy when seen through these goggles, the less light available the more fuzzy the view. You also experience tunnel vision and have a hard time judging actual distance. Even with these difficulties, though, the invention of night vision goggles has revolutionized what you are able to do at night.

Night Vision Goggles - Not Just for the Military
While they are certainly useful to the military, night vision goggles have lots of nifty civilian uses as well. Hunters use them so they don't have to use flashlights in the woods. The goggles help keep them stealthy for hunting before dawn. Even if you don't use a gun, night vision goggles are fantastic for watching nocturnal wildlife. Many animals are only active after dark and the best way to see them clearly is with pair of night vision lenses, so you won't scare them off.
Night vision goggles are also great fun for backyard paintball and nerf fights, just make sure you have the area cleared so you don't accidentally trip over anything. And if you are looking for an inexpensive pair for your kids, Eyeclops makes a great kids' pair of night vision goggles that grown-ups love too, and they usually sell for less than $100 (military night vision goggles sell for 10s of thousands!).
