Vintage Motorcycle Goggles

You can be just like Easy Rider in a hot pair of vintage motorcycle goggles. Add a leather helmet and a scarf and you'll look stylin' on your hog! Military goggles became extremely popular with motorcyclists right after World War I and you can find many adaptions for military styles here.

The protective part of the goggle that goes around the eye was usually made from leather and the goggles were fastened on with a leather tie at the back. The lenses themselves were usually made from glass and their primary job was to keep dust and other debris from flying into the eyes of the driver.

These are quite rare these days, and are highly collectible items, especially as they look great hanging around your neck or sitting on top of a hat or cap. Although they actually are fairly comfortable to wear (although a little on the 'chunky' side), their use today has gone from being something worn when riding a motorcycle, to a fashion statement for especially those into the steampunk sub-culture.

According to most motorcycle buffs, the first vehicle than can properly be called a motorcycle was invented in 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler because it featured a gas-powered engine. However, those of us who are interested in all things steam and steampunk might want to take a look further back. Because in 1867, American inventor Sylvester Howard Roper invented a steam-powered motorcycle. It was fueled by coal and had two cylinders. Roper also invented a steam-powered automobile! Now Harley-Davidson? They didn't get around to building their first motorcycle until 1903!
